💩 UN: “Fossil fuel industry conductive massive disinformation campaign”
This week’s highlights
[#heat] — 2024 is on track to be the hottest year on record, following the previous high in 2023, with July marking the second-warmest month recorded. Record temperatures have led to significant heat waves affecting millions, driven by greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels. Sea surface temperatures were also near record highs, contributing to the rapid intensification of hurricanes. La Niña conditions may lead to a more active hurricane season, while reductions in sea ice have further elevated surface air temperatures.
[#greatbarrierreef] — A new study reveals that the Great Barrier Reef faces imminent demise due to unprecedented ocean heat, attributed to climate change and greenhouse gas emissions. Temperatures in the Coral Sea have reached their highest levels in 400 years, leading to widespread coral bleaching. Scientists warn that without urgent action to reduce emissions, the reef may not survive this generation. While some experts suggest selective breeding of heat-resistant corals, others emphasize the need for immediate emission reductions to protect the remaining healthy reefs.
[#disinformation] — The UN warns that fossil fuel companies are conducting a massive disinformation campaign to slow the transition to renewable energy, creating a false narrative that climate action is too difficult or expensive. Despite perceptions of a backlash against climate policies, global surveys show strong support for reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The UN calls for enhanced national plans under the Paris Agreement to ensure equitable climate policies and to address the impacts of climate inaction, which are increasingly felt even in wealthy nations. Governments are urged to prioritize ambitious climate action and involve diverse societal perspectives in planning the transition.
