‼️News you can’t miss

Here’s one important scary/bad (🙀), good (😻), interesting (😼) and fossil (💩) news item.

🙀 We have one 1 EV battery maker in EU (and US) who’s in the top 10 in terms of market share.

😻The why and the how of composting.

😼 What options do we have to solve heating in various applications?

💩 Inside the war of making the consumer think their plastic cup is being recycled.

👩‍⚕️ Status: Climate & Science

Let’s look at how we’re doing this week!

[#rain] — A new study shows that climate change is causing wetter, heavier rainfall (at least in the US). In short, the air can hold 7% more moisture for each 1C of temperature increase (which means that

📰 The 7 Grand Challenges

⚡️Decarbonize Electricity

Clean electricity is the one do-or-die challenge we must solve.

[#nuclear] — Greta Thunberg says that closing nuclear power plants in Germany was a mistake. And she’s not wrong. What’s more interesting for nuclear bros might be that she’s not saying that new ones should build.

[#solarvsfood] — The UK politicians might not have read the latest on agrivoltaics because the environment secretary is proposing to restrict solar farms to land that is in such bad state that it can’t be used for agriculture.

[#wind] — The prototype of a new wind turbine set new a world record in power output. A whopping 359MWh was produced by this single wind turbine over the course of 24h. It is Siemens Gamesa’s new 14MW wind turbine that did this. Interestingly, 14MW x 24h = 336MWh. But, they also state that it has some sort of boost function that allows it to produce 15MW, and that equals 360MWh pr 24h so clearly close to theoretical max! Also the windturbines rotor diameter are 222 meters 😳.

🏘 Reduce impact of urban and rural areas

Lowering the impact of urban and rural areas.

[#batterymarket] — Here’s an interesting post that shows the development in market share of EV batteries over the past decade. Suffice to say, it’s pretty insane. 10 years a CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Limited) wasn’t even on the chart, but now they have a 34% market share. This article lists the top 10. You wanna know how many of these are from the US? 0. You wanna know how many of these are from the EU? Surprisingly 1, SVOLT, which is German. They have 1% market share.
