‼️News you can’t miss
Here’s one important scary/bad (🙀), good (😻), interesting (😼) and fossil (💩) news item.
🙀 Biodiversity set up for it’s “Copenhagen moment” (which is not good).
😻 Tropical cyclones 13% less frequent due to climate change
💩 21 toxic (and cancerous) compounds enter your home as unburned fossil gas if you have a gas stove.
👩⚕️ Status: Climate & Science
Let’s look at how we’re doing this week!
[#cyclones] — Here’s a bit of good climate change news for once. New research suggests that tropical cyclones are 13% less frequent with climate change. However, the authors also warn that lack of long term data makes the effect a bit hard to quantify precisely.
📰 The 7 Grand Challenges
⚡️Decarbonize Electricity
Clean electricity is the one do-or-die challenge we must solve.
[#inflation] — Here’s a more detailed look at the cost of renewables. As I wrote about last time the cost of renewables has increased for the first time last year due to the inflation. Onshore wind got up 7% and fixed axis solar increased 14%. Mind you that still marks an 86% reduction in cost of solar and 46% cost in wind since 2010.
[#nuclear] — In a new report the IEA states that nuclear has a unique chance for a comeback here amidst rising fossil fuel prices and energy security challenges, but it also hits the head on the nail by saying that in order to that the nuclear industry must do everything it can to stop cost and schedule overruns.
🏘 Reduce impact of urban and rural areas
Lowering the impact of urban and rural areas.
[#fossilgas] — My pet peeve is back! New research suggests that with the unburned fossil gas you get into your home if you have a gas stove comes more than 21 additional toxic compounds some of which are linked to cancer risk.
